VIEW FROM COMMISSIONERS’ CORNER—February 2010

Over the past two and a half years or so, at all levels NAHRO has made strides in the direction of fostering commissioner relevance to the mission. Advocacy effectiveness and life-experience understanding have been acknowledged and fostered. Not only nice words but also substance—targeted training tracks at conferences and liason emphasis—have broadened the parameters for commissioner involvement and contribution.

The clarification and broadening of our commissioner data base makes it possible to involve more commissioners in the direction and planning of our efforts. At SW NAHRO, Professional Development VP Jeannie Epperson and President Katie Anderson have expressed their openness to our suggestions regarding training that will bring us to conference and other kinds of help we might need, individually and collectively.

So now it’s up to us! We owe our partners substantive response. The only response to the Dec. e-mail asking for suggestions was “green,” duly forwarded to PD. In Springdale this June, I give fair warning, additional substance should come from this committee: self-evaluation? Term limits? Available funding streams? Channeling of shared best practices? Conflicts of interest? Balancing responsibilities?

Thinking caps on! 2011 SW NAHRO should be not only for commissioners but by commissioners. We can make it happen!
